The embassy will take at least five working days to process your documents. Once the documents are processed, you will be issued a fully stamped Visa. The major benefit of applying for Visa through the embassy is that you will have a fully stamped Visa with you before your departure to Vietnam. However, there are certain drawbacks in the system that you should be aware of. You will have to visit the embassy several times as this procedure requires the applicant to visit the facility multiple times before the process is complete. Also, your documents will be forwarded ahead by postal mail. In this case, you stand to lose your valuable documents such as passport in case your package is misplaced or lost in transit.
The easier, more convenient and more affordable alternative to this procedure is applying for Visa on Arrival. In order to apply for Visa on Arrival, you will have to get in touch with a travel agent based in Vietnam. You will have to fill up an online application form on the agent’s website. While filling up the online application form, you will have to fill in details such as your name, occupation, address, purpose of visit, duration of stay etc. While filling up the purpose of visit, you will have to choose from options such as business, tourist and transit. A business Visa offers validity of one month, three month or six months. A tourist Visa comes with a validity of one month and transit Visa offers a validity of less than five days.
Online applications are processed in a couple of days. After the form is processed, you will be issued a letter of approval. Your travel agent can collect this letter of approval on your behalf and forward it to you. On reaching Vietnam, you will have to produce this letter of approval at the Visa on Arrival counter. Along with the letter of approval, you will also have to submit the Visa stamping fees in order to get the Visa on Arrival.
It is to be noted that the Visa on Arrival facility is extended only to those travelers who arrive in Vietnam by air. For those taking land routes, it is mandatory that they carry all their documents with them while traveling. In case of a cruise ship, the cruise authorities are to be contacted for information regarding Visa on Arrival.
