The embassy will take at least five days to process your documents. Once your documents are processed, you will be issued a fully stamped Visa in the self-addressed envelope you had submitted. One of the biggest benefits of applying through the embassy is that you will have a fully stamped Visa with you before you leave for Vietnam. However, there are several drawbacks to this system. You will have to make several visits to the embassy as this procedure requires you to make multiple visits till the process is complete. Also, your documents such as your original passport will be forwarded through postal mail. This is highly risky as you may also lose your documents if the package is misplaced or lost in transit.
In such a scenario, the ideal choice is the Visa on Arrival system. The Visa on Arrival system is much more convenient and easy. To apply for Visa on Arrival, you need to get in touch with a travel agent based in Vietnam. You will have to fill an online application form with all your details such as your name, occupation, purpose of visit, duration of stay etc. While filling up the purpose of visit, you will have to choose from options such as business, tourist and transit. A business Visa gives you a validity of one month, three months and six months. A tourist Visa gives you a validity of one month and a transit Visa gives you a validity of less than five days.
Once the form is filled, you will have to pay the Visa fees and the service charges of the travel agent. This amount can easily be transferred online. Your online application form will be processed in a couple of days, after which you will be issued a letter of approval. This letter of approval will have to be submitted at the Visa on Arrival counter at the airport you arrive in, along with the Visa stamping fees, to collect your Visa on Arrival.
It is to be noted that the Visa on Arrival is available only to those travelers who arrive in Vietnam by air. For those taking land routes, it is mandatory that they carry their Visa and other required documents along with them while traveling.
