Once you have filled up the form and made the payment, the documents will be submitted for processing. Once the documents are processed, you will be issued a fully stamped Visa. The biggest benefit of applying through the embassy is that you can get hold of a fully stamped Visa before leaving for Vietnam. However, there are certain drawbacks too.
This procedure requires the applicant to visit the facility several times before the Visa is issued. This becomes a hassle for all those live in far flung areas and commuting to the embassy location for them is not an easy job. Also, your documents will be forwarded in postal mail, which means there are good chances that you may lose your documents if your package is misplaced or lost in transit.
An easier, safer and quicker alternative to this procedure is the Visa on Arrival facility. In order to apply for Visa on Arrival, you will first have to get in touch with a travel agent based in Vietnam. You will have to fill up an online application form with details such as your name, address, occupation, purpose of visit, duration of stay etc. While mentioning the purpose of visit, you will have to choose from options such as business, tourist and transit. A business Visa offers a validity of one month, three months and a transit Visa offers a validity of less than five days.
Usually, online applications are processed in a day or two. Once your online application is processed, you will be issued a letter of approval. This letter of approval can be collected by your travel agent on your behalf and he can have it forwarded to you.
On reaching Vietnam, you will have to submit this letter of approval at the Visa on Arrival counter of the airport you arrive in. You will also have to submit the Visa stamping fees along with the letter of approval to collect your Visa on Arrival.
It is to be noted that the Visa on Arrival facility is available only to those travelers who arrive in Vietnam by air. For those taking land routes, it is mandatory that they carry all their documents with them while travelling. In case of a cruise ship, the cruise authorities can be contacted for information on Visa on Arrival.
