To apply for the Visa, you must hold a valid and original North Korean passport. The ideal time to apply for Visa through the embassy would be at least six months before the date of travel. Make sure you have at least six months of validity on your passport from the date of your departure from Vietnam and a few spare pages for stamping purposes. You will be taken through a step by step procedure for Visa application. You will be asked to fill up a form in English and mention the place of collection and submission as Vietnam. Along with the duly filled form, you will be required to submit a recent passport sized photograph, a self addressed envelope and your original passport.
The embassy will take about five days to process your documents. Besides the application form and the documents, you will have to submit the Visa fees. You can pay the Visa fees in favour of the Embassy of Vietnam by money order or cashier’s cheque. Once the documents are processed, you will be sent the Visa document, which you can carry with you while travelling to Vietnam. It is important that you fill in all details accurately as the absence of any document or any discrepancy in the information provided can lead to denial of entry into Vietnam or immediate deportation.
The other process, which is far more convenient and easy, is the Visa on Arrival process. You can apply for Visa on Arrival with the help of a travel agent based in Vietnam. You will have to fill up an online application form, mentioning all your details such as name, occupation, purpose of visit, dates of travel etc. While mentioning the purpose of visit, you can choose from options such as business, tourist and transit. Business Visa offers validity of one month, three months and six months. Tourist Visa offers a validity of one month and transit Visa offers a validity of less than five days.
Vietnam immigration officials are very strict about visitors sticking to the activities mentioned in the Visa. So make sure you pick the correct category. Also, usually the Visa issued by the embassy is for single visit. If you wish to gain multiple entries into Vietnam or enter it from a different country, you will have to apply for multiple entry Visa by paying additional fees.
The Visa on Arrival is allowed only for those who arrive in Vietnam by air. Those taking land routes are required to carry all documents with them while travelling. For those travelling in cruise ships, the cruise authorities can share more information on Visa on Arrival.
