When applying through the embassy, you will be required to fill the Visa application form in English and mention the place of collection and submission of Visa as Vietnam. You will have to hold a valid and original passport which will be submitted at the embassy along with a recent passport sized photograph, one self –addressed envelope and the duly filled application form. Once the form is filled and the documents attached, they will be submitted at the embassy for further processing. Along with these documents, you will be required to pay the Visa fees. The fees can be paid in favor of the Embassy of Vietnam by way of money order or cashier’s cheque.
The embassy will require at least five working days in order to process your documents. Once these documents are processed, you will be issued the fully stamped Visa in the self-addressed envelope you had submitted along with your documents. You can carry this document along with you while traveling to Vietnam.
One of the major benefits of applying through the embassy is that you will have a fully stamped Visa in your hands before your departure to Vietnam. However, there are certain drawbacks to this system too. The Visa application process through the embassy is long drawn and you will have to visit the facility several times before the procedure is complete. This can be particularly troublesome for those who live in an area which is far away from the embassy location. Also, you will have to submit your documents by postal mail, which means you, will lose your valuable documents in case of any misplacement.
An easier alternative to this is the Visa on Arrival procedure. To apply for Visa on Arrival, you will have to get in touch with a travel agent based in Vietnam. You will be asked to fill up an online application form with all your personal and travel details such as your name, occupation, duration of stay, purpose of visit etc. While filling up the purpose of visit section, you will have to choose from business, tourist and transit. A business Visa gives you a validity of one month, three months and six months. A tourist Visa will give you a validity of one month and transit Visa will give you validity of less than five days.
Once your online application process is processed, you will be issued a letter of approval. This letter of approval can be collected by your travel agent and forwarded to you. On reaching Vietnam, you can submit this letter of approval at the Visa on Arrival counter at the airport you arrive in.
However, it is to be noted that the Visa on Arrival facility is extended only to those who travel to Vietnam by air. For those taking land routes, it is mandatory that they carry all their documents along with them while traveling. In case you are traveling in a cruise ship, you can contact the cruise authorities for information on Visa on Arrival.
